There are several glitches with Microsoft Sam, Mike, Mary, Anna, David, Hazel, Zira, Mark and Eva, some of which that cause them to pronounce words incorrectly. Following is a list of glitches that have been found.

Note: Many of the mispronunciations are not in the SAPI4 (used for Speakonia) version originally in Windows 2000, although there are some SAPI4 - only bugs.

Word Mispronunciations

Most famously, regardless of version, Sam cannot pronounce the word "soy" (also the spelling "soi"), but instead will make a sound "swurghf", resembling a helicopter blade. In SAPI4 (Speakonia), one can aid this mispronunciation by typing "soei" or "Swoi" instead, and SAPI5: "soe", "swah", or "ssoy". It doesn't happen in Mary and Mike, meaning this issue seems to be specific to the voice itself. However, he can say it correctly if you type a z after the S. He also says it correctly if a word is placed after it that begins with L or W, such as "soy like" or "soy wheat". Sticky Keys XP has also found an accurate way to make him say it correctly in SAPI5. To do this, type "sse loi" (s'e loi in SAPI4). However, he says "soil" correctly. For instances where Microsoft Sam makes a popping noise, try adding a pause. For instance, "just, don't" will fix the popping sound with "just don't".

Numbers

  • 2, too and two: in davemadson's old videos, Sam pronounced it like t'woo.
  • 2NE1: Microsoft Sam, Mary and Mike pronounces it as "2-northeast-1". This can be fixed by spacing the characters (as "2 N E 1").
  • 5. (5 dot): Both versions of Microsoft Sam make a popping sound at the word "dot", if it is preceded by a 5. To rectify this, type "5, dot".
  • 6ix9ine: Microsoft Sam says "six-ix-nine-nin" in the SAPI5 version. He will say the name correctly if you type "Six Nine".
  • 8bit: If you type this in a lot of times, Sam will say "8 billit"
  • 8. (8 dot): SAPI5 Microsoft Sam makes a popping sound at the word "dot", if it is preceded by an 8. To rectify this, type "8, dot".

  • Special characters in SAPI5 Microsoft Sam, Mike, Mary and Anna: ú, ù, û, ü they will pronounce v each; ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷ and ⁸ are said as their base numbers in these four voices, ⁰ (superscript 0) is treated as a degree sign, while ⁹ is ignored; probably treated as ’.
  • ⁰, ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷, ⁸ and ⁹ are ignored in Microsoft David, Zira and Hazel.
  • In the SAPI4 voices, ⁰, ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷, ⁸ and ⁹ are treated as a question mark.
  • 2^2 is failed to be pronounced correctly by any voice! Mispronunciations include: two circumflex accent two, two caret two, two cap two, two—two, and, of course blah.
  • If Sam says a letter and a word after saying any word that ends with the suffix -fy, followed by the word "as", he will say the suffixed word in a somewhat southern drawl. For example: "I Identify as a WTF Train" is said as "I Identifah as a WTF Train". This was fixed in the SAPI5 version.

  • If you type in "Gyrururururururururururururururururururururu" and play it full speed with Anna, it kinda sounds like Perry the Platypus. Cannot be done in SAPI4. (confusing? Added by Gamelover101) (Modified by Vsauce Winner)

Other things Microsoft Sam can make

  • Microsoft Sam (Speech Articulation Module) will say things faster and lower pitched by putting things in parentheses, square brackets or curly brackets. In SAPI4, the lower pitch is still there, but not the faster speed.
  • Oddly enough, Microsoft Sam (Windows XP version) will spell out any text that follows a dash. For instance, if you make Microsoft Sam read "-Bob", he will pronounce it as "B o b", rather than "Bob". Speakonia Microsoft Sam does not do this.
